What fun the students and I are having speaking Harry Potter. I asked a third grade student holding a copy of the third book in the series if he had a piece of chocolate along to ward off any dementors he encountered---he replied without missing a beat--"No, I have my wand along to make a patronus!" Fourth grade tried their hand at creating candy for the Amazon.com contest and spontaneously made up prices for their goodies using Potterspeak currency.I was fascinated by the candy one boy invented that would make the person who ate it stink, and the pencil they used for the test stink, and the smell on the test paper would make the teacher give the student an A+. Everyone seems to be asking everyone else if they are a muggle or if they have read a Harry Potter book. I ran into a sixth grader and his mom at the book store on my way home. he was selecting an outside reading book (a R.L. Stine). When I overheard his mom complain "again!" I started to Potterspeak and the two of them decided to buy the first book. I should have asked for commission but the fact that the boy was willing to try something new was payment enough. I think I'll open a butterbeer and celebrate. -- Nancy Lieber Lower School Library/Media Specialist University School of Milwaukee, Milwaukee, WI Nlieber@execpc.com or Nlieber@usm.k12.wi.us =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
