I'm posting this to the group because I think (hope) that others have had similar experiences -- my high school students READ a lot! Last year, I started a "Food for Thought" program where anybody interested could spend lunch time talking to the group about whatever they read on their own. I let the kids order lunch from a local deli that delivered as a hook. Everytime we did one, I had about 15 kids and 5 teachers show up (we only have about 400 kids in our school and 2 lunch shifts). Everything was voluntary and they could talk about anything they were reading. I expected RL Stine and Patricia Cornwell which I did hear about but I also heard about classics like "Wuthering Heights" and "Slaughterhouse Five." I'd love to hear from others to see if we're just a really weird school <grin> or this happens elsewhere!
