Thanks for the replies to my question about the illustration on the Caldecott Medal. The medal is named after Randolph Caldecott (that much I did know!). The picture on the medal is from one of his books, The Diverting History of John Gilpin, published in 1878. One person also said there is another of his illus. on the other side of the medal, "four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie" from The Queen of Hearts. He was known as one of the top three illustrators of the 19th Century and was the first illustrator to show action in his pictures. An ALA website was given, which also has good info on the Caldecott. The winners of the Medal are posted there on Jan. 17. http://www.ala.org/alsc/caldecott.html I went to my public library and found an old book that had the original illus. in it, but I was also told that it is in Charlotte Huck's Children's Literature in the Elementary School. There is also a filmstrip from Weston Woods called "Randolph Caldecott, The Man Behind the Medal" that has some good info. Thanks again for all the helpful replies! Susan Morris, Librarian John C.
