Hippo and his neighbor Pig are very good friends until
Hippo trims the hedge between their two houses. This creates many
problems because they see too much of each other including things
they would rather not know! When the hedge grows again is their
friendship restored. They do get back together at a birthday party.

For your information some other suggestions were:

~~George and Martha by James Marshall (several suggested them as good
friendship books)

~~ The book is titled Metropolitan Cow and is about a cow and a pig
who become friends.
The cow's family doesn't want their son to be friends with a nasty,
dirty
pig but when the 2 families finally meet they realize that they have
made a
mistake and the friendship between both families thrives.

~~It may be a very old title called "Veronica and the birthday
present" by
Roger Duvoisin. Veronica is a the hippo in a series of picture books.
