I'm to the point where I classify old computers in the same category as a 50 year collection of National Geographic Magazine, encyclopedia's circa 1960 and someone's old college textbooks. They are basically useless and take up value space to store and time to dispose of. Yes, you can use old computers for simple word processing but our classrooms are limited as to physical space to put them, furniture to put them on and plugs to plug them into. Why clutter up a classroom with a basically useless machine? We've had teachers bring in ones they have received from friends and they end up gathering dust, especially because they are often to old to run the current versions of the software we use. These days, if it doesn't have a CD-ROM drive-something very common among the old Macs you can't even load current software. We say thanks but no thanks, and if there is no way to gracefully refuse the machine, it goes directly to our districts surplus equipment auction.
