I recently had the opportunity to do something with a few elementary students that I had always thought I would like to try just to see their reaction ... A young student (2nd or 3rd grader) happened to be standing in the picture book area (K-1 section) ... she pulled out an Eric Carle book and found an abstract silhouette drawing of a man and woman naked ... she said that she didn't think that sort of thing was appropriate for young children ... I looked at the picture, flipped to the verso, nodded knowingly and announced that we librarians have tried to get that publisher to stop doing that to books for young children, then turned back to the offending page and torn it out of the book . . . I then asked her if it was okay for the younger ones now ... she responded that yes, it was ... so I handed it to her and asked her to put it back on the shelf... When she did ... I continued to wonder out loud who those guys think they are - just because thousands of people buy their books, just because they win an award here or there, and just because hundreds of people make their livings producing and handling those books to get them to us, it is no reason for them to think they can sneak those kinds of pictures by us! We're on the lookout, and we'll squash them at every opportunity... Of course the other students began to protest that the book just isn't the same without the page ... So, perhaps they have been paying attention and do realize that the author has a message to convey in his or her own way, regardless of what one or two people might think . . . The complainer then decided to change the subject quickly and also realized she was late for class... Aloha y'all ... Earl J. "Just an old Maui boy with a poor sense of direction ...
