Hi LM-NETTERS,

This is my first time posting so here goes...

Recently an elementary librarian in my district purchased books from
a well known publisher that contain Internet sites as suggested resources.
The set has a 1999 copyright date. A parent of a child that borrowed
one of these books complained to the librarian that when she went to one
of the Internet sites given, there were pornographic ads on the site. She
felt that the librarian should have researched the sites before the book
went out. This was the first student to borrow the book.

When I went to the site in question there were three very prominent ads
at the top of the web page and they were definitely ADULT material!
This is a problem that neither of us had even thought of before. BTW,
the librarian who purchased the books has no Internet access.

The publisher will be notified of course but should the books be returned?
We don't see how anyone can be expected to preview all the web sites that
are becoming a regular part of many book and magazine resource lists.
Shouldn't the parent of this child have previewed the site before letting
her
child see it? Our principals are understandably concerned and have suggested
that we don't put out any books with URL's in them until this is resolved!
We're hoping that the collective wisdom of this group will come up with
some suggestions for this situation.

TIA.
