Just to add to this discussion-- I don't know whether this will necessarily make life time readers, as some have implied. This is a slightly different situation, but there are some similarities: My husband considers himself a non-reader. He reads the daily paper, magazines, textbooks and technical manuals, but probably doesn't read a novel once every 5 years. As an adult he looks back at a 6th grade reading contest: not self-imposed, but school sponsored, the goal was the most books read, not biggest book or most pages. He won, and DID read the book he won as prize, but very little since! My daughter did have a contest with a friend between 6th and 7th grade to see who read the most pages, and won, and still loves to read as a college sophomore, so it doesn't always backfire!
