Tried to post a hit of ideas for this week (April 9-12) but lost my mail when the computer froze up. I'll start with what I'm going to do and end with the ideas I can remember: "Count on Your Library" contest. I have a large pretzel jar which I've filled with jellybeans. Everyone who checks out something from the library gets a guess on the number of beans. Closest answer wins the jar. (Counting will be a challenge since I'm on Weight Watchers!) "Share a Book" We're participating in Follet's Share a book program. I made "wish lists" of books I'd like on Titlewave, then they sent me the lists for my various grades. I'm sending them out with the report cards at the end of this week. Students bring in order form and check and I order the books for our library from Follett (See their web page for more info). Booktalks for English classes - roving librarian gives 5-10 minute advertisements during English classes - this will be a challenge for grades 7-12. Another good idea from the archives was to take a piece of candy and attach an appropriate saying and put it in faculty mailboxes. Different one every day for the week. Hershey's Hugs - "Hug a Book", stick of gum "Stick to your library". Lifesavers - "The library is a lifesaver" etc. One librarian has bought seed packets for each teacher and is attaching an ALA bookmark that says "Plant a seed, read" You may have seen the trivia contest posted about two weeks ago. Celebrities come and read to classes. Coffeehouse in the library and read poetry - tie in with poetry month. Librarian dresses up as book character and students have to guess who they are. My goal is to increase reading - we'll see how it goes. ===== Nancy Bleakley School Library Media Specialist James I.
