To Barbara and Peter,

This is a case in which I feel very guilty for not reporting
immediately what I had initially seen when I first read the obscene
posting....the difference in the spelling of the name in the email and that
which was posted on the return address screen. I have always been very
careful to try to spell people's names correctly (partially because of my
own name--which is longer and more complex than I have listed here) and
usually double check names that are very unusual. "Barbara's post" (which
I now see was not her own) showed that the last name on the letter sent and
the last name on the return address were not the same.
I immediately began to write a note to Peter and the LM_NET listserv
to ask if anyone had checked on this difference before "judgment was made"
to restrict her. I then decided to keep my nose out of other people's
business. I now feel like I have witnessed a crime and could have done
something earlier to stop it but didn't. If others reported the
difference, I appreciate your efforts to help. I could not believe that
anyone (especially a professional) would post such a message and
immediately thought that perhaps a student had done it. However, because I
did not know the original situation relating to the posting, I refrained
from stepping up to "defend someone."
I hope that Barbara is allowed to continue to post and that we begin
to better understand the complex issues involved in monitoring a listserv.
To both Peter and Barbara, I apologize for not stepping up to ask a
question when it should have been asked.
