In response to the comments regarding how to weed old and/or donated obsolete computer equipment, I would offer an idea that our primary teachers have used in our school...Let the students take them apart with screwdrivers and explore the insides during center time or free choice time...the students use analytical skills determining where to start, what to do to achieve the desired outcome and then how to proceed. They also work on that manual dexterity in learning how to use different sorts of tools. They satisfy alot of curiosity, de-mystify the computer and have the opportunity to break something down (with respect of course, no ripping or smashing). It is also amazing to see how students will build new quizzmos with the materials they can recycle from the dismantling. When the mess gets too big, just toss it all out. This works well with other small appliances as well. A short lesson on safety regarding wires and sharp points and edges is all it takes to start an amazing learning experience...
