I just saw two really good books of quotations for children at the Lincoln,
Massachusetts Public Library. Both books are arranged according to broad
topic and the quotes are indexed by more discreet topics as well. Has
anyone used these:

Quotations for Kids: compiled and edited by J. A. Senn. Millbrook Press
1999. Has over 2,000 quotations and amusing or informative pictures by
Steve Pica. It is appealing in format and has the added attraction of
occasional footnotes with definitions for the harder words.

The Scholastic Treasury of Quotations for Children by Adrienne Betz.
Scholastic 1998. About 1200 brief quotations. No pictures, less appealing
layout, but would complement the other book. The short quotes are
excellent and an additional section gives brief biographies of the people
quoted. There are also some inserts that tell stories about the
circumstances surrounding particular quotes.

I think these two books would get a lot of use in a school
library....teachers and students could use them for assignments, and kids
would probably want to browse through them just for fun. As with
dictionaries of foreign languages which elementary students love to pore
over, a library might have to get both a reference copy and a regular loan
copy of these titles.

Any comments, anyone?
