Gary Hartzell: "I try to stress the notion that being the best school
librarian in Kansas is not enough. Being ready, willing, and able
represents only three-quarters of what it takes to be successful and to
make the kinds of contributions that school librarians can and do want
to make. The fourth element is opportunity - and opportunity is
something that is controlled by others. Teachers control collaboration
opportunities (you can't be collaborative alone no matter how much you
want to be) and the principal controls virtually all the other forms of
opportunity for library media contribution in a school. Teachers and
administrators extend those opportunities based upon how THEY perceive
the library and the librarian, not based on what the librarian thinks or
even upon a separate objective reality. The workshop really is aimed at
developing skills in educating teachers, administrators, and board
members -- and in shaping their perception of the library and
librarian.."
