I am currently a school media specialist student at Queens College. I have completed my internship and learned about some reading motivational techniques that appeared to be quite effective. One that was interesting involves the use of an internet site www.quia.com. The SLMS first read a story and then integrated the use of a personalize quiz (which is made at the above site by the SLMS). The students hear the story as a read-aloud and then perform the quiz as a group or individually. This was excellent for listening skills as well as comprehension skills. The students also become familiar with the use of the mouse and the benefits of the computer as a resource. The students also wanted to hear more stories and participate in the quiz. Other ideas were to put author web sites in the favorites file and create lesson plans based on the author and his/her works. This was sampled with 1st and 2nd grade students. It was also used with 5th grade students as a research project in the area of American History. Has anyone else tried this site or something simular? If so, I would be interested if you felt it was a worthwhile reading motivational technique. Many thanks in advance.
