LM_NET: Library Media Networking
We have just received 5 ZapMe computers this week and have them
connected. A school administrator has become very concerned that we
have no filter on them. (Our state has installed BESS filter this
year.) We have the tech person who installed the computers ready to
put a call in to the company to ask how to turn on the "security" -
heavy or light...
My question is for high schools with the ZapMe's: Are your computers
on any security, and, if so, are they "light" or "heavy"?
Middle schools: same question...
The computers aren't supervised every minute of the day...they're in
the library, but there are several times during the day that I'm not
here for short periods of time...my opinion is that we don't need any
type of security/filter, but I can understand the fear of the
administrators.
I'm more concerned with keeping students away from constant
email...most use hotmail anyway and seem to send most messages to
other students in the same building. I can insist they not use it,
but should I? Is it really a big issue? I've been librarian for years
and years, and every once in a while I wonder if I need to update my
thoughts!
OK, I'm rambling...my question again (I've checked the Archives and
read the latest info on it): high school - any, heavy ,light? middle
school: heavy, light?
