If anyone has any leads on school library jobs in the Memphis, TN area I
would love to hear from you. I am presently working part-time and looking
to work full-time in the fall.
Thanks in advance.

Subject: HIT: Library Shelving

Several of you asked me to post a hit on my query
regarding linear feet/number of books formula for
library shelving. Here are the replies. And,
thank you to all who responded.

I remember that you ordinarily should be able to
shelve THIRTY (30)
regular hardbound books per library shelf--
that would fill it.

Here in Maine we've just finalized a handbook for
library facilities
which includes the shelving charts as an
appendix...

Enjoy! And hope it helps!

Dear Connie,

In my 1991book, Designing and renovating school
library media centers,
from ALA Books, it estimates the following for a
3-foot wide shelf:

                30 average size
                60 picture books
                15-18 reference books

Of course, the shelves would be farther apart for
picture books or
reference shelves.

Here is their estimate based on shelf height:

                42" high, 3 adjustable shelves =
90 volumes
                60" high, 5 adjustable shelves =
150 volumes
                82" high, 6 adjustable shelves =
210 volumes
                96" high, 7 adjustable shelves =
240 volumes

These, of course are average sized books.

Hope this helps.

I believe I was told in library school (lo, these
many years ago) that
ideally a library would begin with shelves no more
than 1/3 full and never
exceed 2/3-3/4 full.

-
A general rule of thumb is this:
168 books per 3 foot section of single side
shelving or
336 books per 3 foot section of double sided
shelving

This formula is based on 8 books per shelf foot,
of 36" wide units that
are 7 shelves high.
