We are an all AR school and the program has been very successful in promoting reading and increasing test scores and library circulation. Last year my circulation topped 58,000 with a low SES, mostly ESL student population of 700. I have about 20 copies of the various HP books and they are widely popular. There isn't any reason any student could not check out HP #4-granted, I might try and convince a first grader that Junie B. Jones might be a better choice but if they insisted.... Last year 2 of our second graders read, took and passed (as in 80%-95% ) the tests on all 3 of other HP books. I bottom block the tests- i.e., 4th graders can only test on books 3.0 or higher - with the exception of special ed, ESL or any other reasonable reason, but I rarely top block a child. The only reason I bottom block is that we have a student body that sometimes needs an extra push to challenge themselves. Before we instituted bottom blocks, most the 5th graders would only take tests on the Brown Bear,Brown Bear and similar books. I know some schools strictly adhere to the ZPD and reading/checking out books within it, but you can run ignore that rule and still run a successful AR program. After all, what are rules but something to be stretched and occasionally broken.....
