I hope that everyone out there in Library Land will remember to keep their heads on straight when they think of AR. AR DOES NOT control what kids read. The HUMANS who MAKE THE DECISIONS regarding AR are the ones responsible for the good, the bad, and the ugly associated with AR. I personally have had wonderful success with AR in my former school....50,000 circulations with 270 kids. Happy kids, happy parents, happy teachers....and NEVER handed out a prize in 6 years and no grades were ever attached to AR! I have moved to a new school where there was only ONE copy of HP1 that had NEVER been read until this summer. Why? Because the kids "never got up that high". (It was a K-6 school) Why? Because the kids REALLY were "trapped in Azkaban". My old school (K-5) had three copies of each HP, never on the shelf until inventory.
