Novel for 8th graders

I have been asked by our Junior High English/Literature teacher for
suggestions for a novel to be read as a class by 8th grade students.  It
has been suggested that this might be a classic.  Knowing what a great
group this is, I was hoping you might help me with some suggestions for
her.  Thanks in advance for your help.
