Dear Laura:
I was an English teacher with a master's in English at Chinle High School
for ten years before I became the media specialist. Toward the end of
that ten years, I did go back to graduate school for an MLS, and I
enjoyed every minute of it. I'd highly encourage you to go back to
school. What you need is teacher certification, if you want to be a media
specialist in a public school; for community colleges, though, your MLS
is adequate.

There are openings in Arizona for school media specialists; I'll be
retiring next May, so if you think you'd like to live on the Navajo
Reservation and manage a 40,000 book library in a high school with 1400
students, you're welcome to prepare and apply in March 2001. We are fully
automated and we have fifteen computers for student research, a magazine
database, etc.
We are located at the heart of the Navajo Nation, about 100 miles from
the nearest large town. However, we do have a supermarket, two
restaurants, two hotels, one stoplight.

A media specialist's job is very hard and very rewarding. Read
Information Power II from the ALA; it gives a comprehensive overview of
the responsibilities of a media specialist. I think it's $26 for members.
You can find it on the website for ALA.

Good luck.
