My school has gone to block scheduling for all grades K-5 (700+ students). The media center will be one of the block classes, with half of two classes in for 40 minutes, then taking the other half of the classes for another 40 minutes once a week. This will serve as their book checkout time and whatever else we want to do with the class. We had a semi-flexible schedule last year, where we allowed students to come in anytime to exchange books. I have a full time aide, only because she's scheduled to do the blocks. I'm "free" to do my media center stuff (and I guess ignore my aide and the class that's in there - never mind that she might need my help). How do you handle book checkout? Do you allow your students to come in anytime to exchange books or do you just have open checkout time in the morning? I searched the archives, but didn't find much about students coming in anytime to exchange books.
