down to create this list to help in 20 minutes.

How Teachers Should Interact with Their Librarian

1. Know what lesson you want to teach and set up a time to plan with her.

2. Have in mind specific ways you want the librarian to help you, but don't
be inflexible - the librarian may have better ideas. In a subject specific
lesson combined with library skills, let her teach to her expertise.

3. Be clear about which parts you will teach and which parts the librarian
will teach. (Whose responsibility is it to .... gather materials, run off
handouts, assess the product)

4. Know what materials you want or ask if it is feasible to obtain the
needed number of books on a certain topic in a timely manner. (If you need
obscure reference materials, she will find it faster.)

5. Make sure the librarian has time to prepare.

6. Be prepared to adjust your schedule to hers. (Remember you could be
teaching this alone) She teaches the entire school and has an overview of
what's happening in every grade level. You may not be cross-curriculum, but
she is.

7. Don't be shy about offering help to your librarian for her special
projects (like the bookfair or a technology workshop). Later, other teachers
may need her at the same time you do.

8. It is more likely that she has what you want than that you have what she
wants. If your relationship goes sour, you will lose more than she will.

9. If you need materials the library does not have on hand, explain why you
need it and how you will use it. She knows more ways of obtaining it than you
do and probably has more funds to order it. Knowing why it is important
tends to give it a higher priority.

10. Build a good working relationship with your librarian. Remember your
librarian is your peer.
