Well, I guess I struck out on this one. I received a few ideas (below) but a lot more interest in the hit than in actual suggestions. If you still have any ideas for a professional collection (either resources or web pages for resources) but were unable to email me, please go ahead, and I will post a second hit if I get enough responses. The original posting is as follows... We are in the process of ordering books for next year and really need to beef up our professional collection. We are a K-12 bilingual school (Spanish/English) with about 1,200 students and a staff of 120, both Spanish and English speaking. What are your or your teachers favorite professional books? Are there lists of highly recommended professional books for school libraries? Although we are bilingual and would like some books with an EFL/ESL slant, that is not absolutely necessary at this time. We are just looking for some good, solid professional resources for our teachers. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- HITS --------------------------------------------------------------------------- One that I think is tops is Raising Lifelong Learners --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'd recommend _The Manufactured Crisis: Myths, fraud, and the attack on America's public schools_ by David Berliner and Bruce Biddle. It was published in 1995 by Addison-Wesley (ISBN 0-201-40957-7). The authors provide well-documented facts that prove that, far from failing, America's public schools are providing good education experiences for most youngsters. Areas of needed reform and "real problems" also are discussed in clear, understandable language. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - I always suggest "The First Days of School" by Harry Wong. I wish I had owned a copy when I first started teaching! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - My teachers like books that have ideas that they can use right away. We have a lot of reading guides for book kits that we own. Other than that I follow whatever the superintendent has decided our focus will be for professional development for the year. This year we are working for standards based education and teacher evaluation. I have also added a lot of reading theory books for teachers to check out. I use www.ascd.org as a resource for good materials. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- *************************************************** Thomas David Rompf Head of Information Services Colegio Bolivar Apartado Aereo 26300 Cali, Valle, Colombia South America Home: +57-2-330-2381 Work: +57-2-555-2039 Fax: +57-2-555-2041 / USFax (810) 277-0487 Cell: +57-3-560-0064 Email: tom@rompf.org / tomrompf@hotmail.com Colegio Bolivar Library Web Page: http//www.rompf.org or http://www.uniweb.net.co/bolivar/library Colegio Bolivar School Page: http://www.colegiobolivar.edu.co *************************************************** =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
