For those in the Midwest, mark your calendars for the IEMA Spring Conference in Des Moines. http://www.aea11.k12.ia.us/IEMA/2001welcome.htmlSpeakers Conference Theme: Connecting! Literacy and Lifelong Learning March 29 and 30, 2001 Savery Hotel, Des Moines, IA Welcome to the IEMA Conference 2001 Web site! You will see this site change as we get closer to the March conference. We welcome professionals, teachers, paraprofessionals, exhibitors, administrators, public librarians, and other people interested in the power of school library/media centers in our schools! The conference will highlight what is happening nationally and how it impacts Iowa today and in the future. We are excited to announce three of the major speakers at the conference. Jamie McKenzie will be featured at the conference kickoff and at a concurrent session. Jamie has visited Iowa in the past and is highly regarded. Be prepared to be challenged! Keith Curry Lance is the force behind the Colorado, Alaska, and Pennsylvania studies on the impact of school library/media centers on student learning. Keith will talk about the studies, how programs should change, and the Iowa research study currently underway. Ken Haycock, former president of AASL, will be featured on Friday. Ken has done outstanding work as an advocate for library/media specialists and programs. Authors: We are pleased to announce the authors who will presenting during the conference in addition to being our honored guests at the Authors' Reception. Jane Kurtz will talk about acquiring strategies for planning collaborative literacy projects. Jane will also present with Jacqueline on literature as a stepping stone to independent learning. Jacqueline Briggs Martin will demonstrate how to use literature as a stepping stone to independent learning. Carol Gorman and Maryann Weidt will share ideas on inspiring and encouraging creative expression in the classroom. Exhibitors: Please click here for a list of exhibitors. You'll find direct links to LBSS and Spectrum. What's new at IEMA: Just as schools and school library/media centers are adapting to changes in technology, electronic learning, and shifting resource allocation, IEMA is changing, too! Here are some of the changes you'll find this year: We're going to use the Web and e-mail to inform members about the conference and registrations. We're not cheap, just innovative! The conference is two very-full days. We talked with the IEMA Board, exhibitors, and with a sampling of IEMA members and decided to go for it! We think it will be easier for library/media specialists and teachers to request a full day to attend. You'll find plenty of time to visit the exhibits and network with attendees. You can receive staff development or Drake graduate credit for participating in the Conference. Each of the sessions will be linked to the Information Power or NETS standards and will describe how the information presented will impact student learning. Invited authors will share their expertise in writing and publishing to help library/media specialists improve student learning. The authors will share instructional strategies and techniques as well as their personal experiences in the publishing world. We're encouraging library/media specialists to invite a teacher, technology coordinator, curriculum coordinator, or principal to attend. There will be some important research and some innovative instructional strategies to share. The Polk County Convention Complex will be used for major sessions on Thursday. Exhibits will be on Thursday only. Legislators will be invited to the Friday breakfast--great opportunity to network and share your concerns. We're reaching out to exhibitors who may not have been to IEMA. Spread the word and clear your calendar. We hope to see you in Des Moines in March!
