Hi Guys,
Thank you for your overwhelming response to my post on email use in your
schools. I received nearly 200 responses and was surprised to discover
how many problems we face juggling "recreational email" with academic goals.
Though in most schools (80%), non-academic use of email is practically
banned, many of us have worked out some sort of compromise--a limited
number of workstations, before and after school, during lunch.
Some of you spoke of the need to allow students with limited access at
home, access at school. Foreign exchange students present a particularly
strong need. You pointed to positive use made by world language classes.
Some of you have had wonderful success with clear understanding of clear
policies.

A few schools told me that Web-based email accounts were especially problematic
because they facilitated drug deals. I heard a number of other horror
stories involving less-than-savory email contacts between young people and
strangers that occurred during school hours.

I certainly don't have the answer, but my article is at:
http://inq.philly.com/content/inquirer/2000/12/28/tech_life/VLNZ28.htm

Thanks to all who helped. (I tried to use a combination of library and
nonlibrary types in the article, with a focus on local stories.)
