Here is a copy of the letter I sent to NEA on the same subject. They need
lots of letters to demonstrate our real concern.

Subject:
               Read Across America
         Date:
               Tue, 01 Feb 2000 10:26:28 -0400
        From:
               Terrill Middle School <terrillms@home.com>
 Organization:

           To:
               neatoaday@nea.org

As a member of NEA, I find it very disheartening to be "invisible" to my own
association. Once again the February issue talks about Read Across America
with no mention of school libraries or media specialists.

While realizing that our numbers are not as large as classroom teachers, it
should be recalled that we are part of this event. Where would the day be
without libraries and librarians? How would the students access the books and
other materials?

Gary Hartzell wrote an article, "The Invisible Librarian" for School Library
Journal in November, 1997. I think it might be worthwhile for your editorial
staff to read this article. It might heighten their awareness of the
important role of the school library media specialist in promoting the love of
reading and the teaching of information literacy skills to all students.

Since we are all seeking that simple goal, it would seem to me that all
members of the teaching team could be included. In the library world, we call
this teamwork - collaboration. Next year let's demonstrate real collaboration
by including those of us who are very, very tired of being invisible.

As a dues paying member of the NEA, I do expect equal treatment. Thanks for
your attention to this important issue.

Subject: GEN:Resource Center Atmosphere

With the help of our new principal we are going to begin evaluating our
current Resource Center policies. In addition, she is very interested
in determining the type of "atmosphere" that is best for a college prep
high school resource center. We have facilities for as many as 130
students with one to two supervisors, this breaks down into small
tables, study carrels, 5 study rooms, 11 computers and four couches. In
the past we have tried to maintain an academic atmosphere and I am now
seeking some in-put from this group as to how others would work with
this set-up. I will gladly submit the hits on this to the group.
