REF: who "discovered" distance from earth to sun?

A student came to the library asking who figured out how far away the Earth
was from the sun, and how this person figured it out.

We've checked several resources but so far haven't found the answer.
Do you know? (if you do, where did you find the answer, or did you just know
it?)

        First off, I want to thank all of you who have responded to my Distance
Learning messages.  It really means a lot to me to have all of you so
active and helping me and so many others out.  I definitely like the
professional commrodery.
        Roseanne, I am curious what you mean by distance learning working better
with some "new tech ideas."  Did you or anyone else have any "new tech
ideas" that you know of or would like to see in the future?
        Also, you mentioned taking some ESL students to distance learning
conferences.  Do you think that Distance Learning is highly beneficial in
assisting students who are ESL at any grade level?
        Lastly, what other types of new and innovative technologies have any of
you used that you think are extremely fantastic or highly beneficial and
successful in your schools?
