I just read one of the Newbery Honor books, "Our Only May Amelia" By Jennifer L. Holm, and greatly enjoyed it. I was especially interested in it because it is set in early Washington state, which is not very common, and of course, is where I live. Now, a question for those who have read it: would you buy this book for an elementary (K-6) library? I was all ready to buy it until I read the scene where the woman who worked in the logger camp is found brutally murdered. She had been hacked to death, and was sliced open so badly she has to be sewn up by May's mother before she can be buried. This scene seemed totally unnecessary to the plot, not to mention, extremely graphic. I don't know if would be appropriate for 4th graders, to whom I would pitch the book (that is the grade which studies Wa. state history). Other than that one scene, I would but the book in a heartbeat. Please e-mail me with your thoughts.
