I rewrote the summer reading lists for my last position, weeded ancient, titles no longer on shelves, and then beefed them up with a LOT of newer acclaimed titles. It may take longer to create, but a longer list allows for lots more choices, obviously. In addition, we always told our kids "or any other book by that author, within guidelines prescribed by the English Dept." Our lists ran 15+ pages, but no one ever complained they couldn't find something good to read. Those pages included a 1-2 line annotation,to give a feel for the book. We never divided the list up by genre, expecting this might have pointed the kids who knew what they like to read to all of that and nothing else. The annotation gives just a hint. We found that kids will often start a discussion by "I don't usually like science fiction, but . . ." Maureen S.
