Book: Elem: Captain Underpants

Yesterday's Dallas newspaper had a story from Naugatuck, CT.  It states
that the fourth graders at a school were "acting like the boys in the
Captain Underpants" book.  The principal removed the book from the
library.  The superintendent was quoted as saying, "The book was
beginning to take on a life of its own."
.........I wonder, were the boys in this town hypnotizing the principal?
