LM_NET,
Several of you asked for a HIT on this topic. I have simply cut and
pasted pertinent parts of replies I received.

Another term for this is "bridging" rooms.

I have a cousin whose kids did "KD" a developmental kindergarten. I
popped
it into ERIC and got the following:

About eight replies explaining that such classes were called pre-first
or pre-second.

My sister-in-law teaches just such a class in Indiana
and they are called "Reading Readiness" classes there.

Try the phrase "bridge classes.

At my school we call it "leap"

we have a transition indergarten and we are also
contemplating a transition 3rd to 4th grade also. You might want to
contact
Cynthia McNally at CEDMCN@aol.com. she is Special Projects Director and
she
could forward your request to the proper channels. I am sure they would
be
happy to share information on this.

How about "junior kindergarten" or "junior first grade"?

Multi-age and Integrated Day programs are programs that allow for the
mixing
of two or more traditional grade levels in a class. A student in an
integrated day
K-1 program might be anywhere from 4-7 yrs. old and labeled
appropriately
for either K or Grade 1. The program will generally provide more
challenge
than a traditional K but less than a traditional Grade 1. The next
placement for the "first grader" will be a determined by how many of
those
all important early learning connections are made. It might be a Grade
1-2,
a Grade 2, or in some (rare) cases a Grade 2-3.
