Lord of the Flies is a great stepping off place for lots of related
projects (though I'm not personally really all that partial to the book
itself)

1. Check for Ashley Montagu's On Aggression (the first edition) which
concentrated on the theme of Lord of the Flies and had some wonderful
reprints of articles giving both sides of the question ;

2. Check the Syntopicom for the Great Books series that Enc. Britannica
put out under "Man". Though this is a heavy duty set of materials, the
nature of man is discussed in many of the books covered ;

3. If you have access to a college/university library with Reader's Guides
going back a way, there was much controversy when the book was published
that continued for a number of years ;

4. For the more literary, compare the views of other survival books
(Gulliver's Travels, Robinson Crusoe, etc.) to see what those author's
basic premise on human nature was ;

5. "Island" maybe still in print (perhaps from Social Studies School
Services), but, if not, creating a Pacific Island map, detailing resources,
etc. and then posing what would happen if your group were stranded there
works great ;

6. And, finally, my favorite, a wilderness campout at which the children
can only take as much as fits in a backpack, sets up a simulation that can
be discussed when they get back to the classroom.
