Hi ... two recent arrivals at the California State Library caught my eye,
and seem worth bringing to the attention of the folks on LM_NET. (Please
pardon the redundancy if these have been mentioned already).

One is The End of Patience: Cautionary Notes on the Information Revolution,
by David Shenk (Indiana University Press, 1999). Shenk is author of Data
Smog, a rumination on the overabundance of data and information today.
Some of the items in The End of Patience were originally prepared for
National Public Radio's "All things Considered." There is probably
something in this collection of essays and other short pieces to attract,
inform, and/or annoy nearly everyone concerned with digital information.
Eminently readable, thoughtful and thought-provoking.

The other (contrasting with Shenk's book in many respects, but definitely
of professional interest to librarians) is The Evolving Virtual Library II:
Practical and Philosophical Perspectives, edited by Laverna M. Saunders
(Information Today, Inc., 1999). Chapters cover a variety of topics,
including (among others) "Building a Digital Library," "Library-Generated
Databases," and (by Joyce Kasman Valenza) "School Libraries Meet the
Tornadoes: The Transformational Impact of School Reform and the Web." Our
own Peter Milbury is pictured in that chapter on page 129, in a screen
print of his "School Librarian Web Pages." This looks like a good balance
of policy and technical information that will be of interest to many on
this list.
