Thanks for all the response. The National Board for Professional Teaching
Standards site is: http://www.nbpts.org Although I didn't find info.
there on plans for adoption of standards and assessment for School
Library/Media Specialists, that's where we should find such plans. Perhaps
I've just missed it. You'll find helpful info. in the following responses:
-------
The NBPTS is developing the Library Media certificate standards currently.
In fact, this very week they are scheduled to be discussed at the National
Board meeting in Seattle. It is expected that later this spring the draft
standards will be circulated for public comment. Following adoption of the
standards (hopefully not later than 10/00), the assessments will be
developed.
--------
What is being finalized is a library/media classification for the
certification. One would be certified as a library media specialist. The
standards are now ready for reactions from the field and then the specific
measurement or assessment tasks will be created. I would say any one who
gained the national certification would get the rewards identified in
their state or local school system. It will be a while yet before we can
begin the process but we are a big step closer.
-------
National Board Certification in Library/Media is supposed to be available
in December 2001.(That was according to the web site as of 3/24/99; may
have been updated since then). Their site is www.nbpts.org. (If you think
this is useful please release it to the whole list -- I haven't figured
that one out yet.)
-------
My understanding is the "our" field will be added at or near the end of (I
think) a 5 year process.
-------
The National Certification aimed directly at Media Specialists is due to be
out in Dec. 2001.
-------
You can get certified in any field you wish.
-------
I'm not sure what you mean by "field". In Pa., one can become a school
librarian either through an MLS program or an M.Ed with school library
certification. I'm currently in an M.Ed/school library certification
program.
To become certified as a teacher I need to pass 3 parts of the National
Teachers Exam: listening skills, general knowledge, and professional
knowledge. To be a school librarian I also need to pass a specialty NTE
certification test for School Library Media Specialists.
-------
I was told that they would not be able to certify librarians until 2001.
-------
They are working on the library media board certification. We recently
got some info from our media director about the pilot program which will
begin next fall. You can call ETS (I think they are the group who
develops the tests) and put your name on the list to be chosen to be a
part of the pilot program. Being a part of the pilot won't get you the
certification, but it will give you a "heads up" on the test (so the
person I spoke with said) and $150. I have that info at school if you
are interested in having it.
-------
Try their website and you'll find that school librarians are on the calendar

for 2001, I believe.
