More helpful responses about national certification for School Library/Media
Specialists:

----------
I received the following info about National Boards a few weeks ago: you
can contact Melissa Nolan
at the Educational Testing Service at 800-779-3339 x5409.

ETS is beginning to take names of those interested in piloting the new
exercises for upcoming board certification areas. You can leave your name
and
address, and information about applying to the pilot program will arrive in
November 2000. The actual test questions / exercises will be given in the
spring of 2001.
----------
I have inquired about this. Currently we may not since our
component is not ready. Late 2001 is the target date for pilot.
I have contacted them directly and I'm on a list.
Miami-Dade and Florida is also making it worthwhile with about
12,000 annually for the next 10 years. Quick way to bank
120,000.00....
-----------
There is currently no certification for us. It is in the development stages
and still two years away. That is a lot of money being offered and there is
not even a playing field for us. I am in FL and they are doing the same
thing
here. I have contemplated a class action suit because this is
discrimination.
However, I am not sure exactly how to start. I would like to hear how
others
feel about this.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards just approved a draft
>of the certifying standards for Library Media Specialists last Saturday in
>Seattle. A committee has been working on them for over 2 years. The
>standards will now go out for public comment in our field (look for them at
>www.npbts.org) and after final approval, we will begin writing the
>assessments in the fall. My guess is that certification will be available
>in the 2001-2002 school year. Many LMS specialists apply for the
elementary
>generalist certification-in fact there were one or two of those people on
>our standards writing committee.
>Sharon Coatney, Chair of NBPTS LMS Standards Committee
----------
Dear All,
The standards for library media specialists were presented for approval to
public comment at the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards
last
week. Sharon Coatney, chair of the sub-committee on LMS standards, David
Lloertscher, Vice-Chair and Kyle Dahlem, liaison from the NBPTS made the
presentation. Following some recommended changes, the standards were
approved
for public comment. That means that within 4-6 weeks those standards will
be
on the NBPTS website and hard copies will be distributed to individuals,
groups
and association for reading and comment.
Next fall the assessments will be piloted---some of you will want to do
that
because it will give you a really good idea about the process. By the fall
of
2001, barring any unforseen circumstance, the LMS certificate will be
available.
That's the latest. The standards align with Information Power. I am
anxious
for you all to see them and give your feedback.
