Colleagues, Quality selection tools are a must in this day of dwindling budgets. I compiled a list of tried-and-true tools as a result of my original query. Below are the responses in no priority. •ALA list of Best Books for various groups •YALSA best lists •use all the "best" lists •Elementary School Library Collection because it has prioritized lists 1,2 and 3 - Must Have, Try to Have and If you can Afford more type categories •Middle School Library Catalog by Wilson •Middle and Junior High School Catalog •Booklist •Best books for children: preschool through grade 6 . . . John T. Gillespie, editor, published by Bowker •A to Zoo:subject access to children's picture books also published by Bowker •Horn Book, published twice yearly with every book given a numerical score •professional books on teaching literacy with biliographies •Appraisal. It has double reviews for each book - one by a librarian and one by a scientist. (It reviews only science books.) • Bulletin for the Center of Children's Books Univ. of Chicago (BCCB), Book Report, and teacher's magazines •I review a reviewers' policy. Do they review things both recommended and not recommended, who does the reviewing, etc. I sometines felt that I got burned by SLJ. •National Science Teacher's Association, Science Books, I review this quarterly at my local college library, so I didn't have the expense of a subscription and found reviews by scientists themselves to be very useful.), Hope this info is useful to you. -- Linda ***************************************************** Mrs. Linda Slacum, Library Media Specialist Cherry Hill Middle School 2535 Singerly Road, Elkton, MD 21921 410.996.5024 or 410.996.5020 lslacum@ccps.org (SCHOOL) or lindas@delanet.com (HOME) http://www.ccps.org/ccps/chms/home/home.html http://www.ccps.org/ccps/ccemo/home/home.html ****************************************************** =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
