Fenner, Carol._The King of dragons_, 1998 [0-689-82217-0] Ian and his Vietnam vet father have been homeless and are living in a deserted building that used to be the town courthouse. One day the father goes out and never comes back and Ian must survive on his own. A museum sets up a kite exhibit in the old courthouse and Ian watches it develop, always being careful. One day he boldly walks out and volunteers to help, lying about his situation. He becomes a hit at the exhibit and gets interviewed on TV where his aunt sees him. It turns out that his father is very mentally ill and was placed in a treatment center. At the end, his father calls his sister and together they go and get Ian, who ends up living at his aunt's. This is a tale of survival for a homeless boy who has to deal with a mentally disturbed father. Although initially confusing, this 216 page book is a wonderful story of self-resolve. The cover makes the reader think it is about a oriental boy with the picture of dragon kite -- hopefully this will not limit its audience. *** Frederick Muller fmuller@tellurian.net Halsted Middle School (973) 383-7440 ext.228 59 Halsted Street FAX (973) 383-7432 Newton, NJ 07860 ------- My book reviews are compiled at: http://www.halsted.org/br.htm =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
