Dear Colleagues:
Why don't we all take a cue from our colleagues in North Carolina? Has
everyone filled out the surveys commissioned by the Board of Regents to the
state university at Buffalo? If you haven't seen it, ask your principal.
It's never too late. One very important point not considered on the survey
is how heavily children rely on their school libraries, not having regular
access to their public libraries (take an informal survey of your students
regarding public library usage). One reason we may not be mandated is that
the Board of Regents may believe that public libraries meet the reading needs
of elementary students. The sad truth is that most rarely visit their public
library and many of us are unable to provide the "full service" we'd like to
due to staffing constraints, because we are not mandated and at the mercy of
whomever decides how to staff our school libraries. If you haven't filled
out your surveys, please do so.
