Has anyone else had difficulty with their barcode reader?

I am using the one that has a long handle with a trigger, it sits on a
stand -sort of looks like a gun.

My problem is this:  I can get it to read the barcodes if they are not
protected.  If they have a piece of tape, barcode protector, etc. over them,
the reader won't pick it up.  You have to type in the barcode number.
