children's book title

Hello LM-Net,

My father is looking for a book title he had as a child (1940's).  All he
can remember is the book was about an Indian chief who after he had a limb
cut off--he would respond that it didn't hurt.  Then the next limb would
come off.

It really sounds like a horrible little book for children--but he would like
to find it.
