* Anastasia Morningstar, Hazel Hutchins, 1984, JH974

When Sarah and Ben meet the mysterious and intriguing Anastasia Morningstar, they 
decide that her uncanny magical powers would be the perfect subject for their 
science project.

* The Chicken Doesn't Skate, Gordon Korman, 1996, JFIC KORMAN
Wild things happen at the South Middle School when Milo's science project, 
Henrietta the chicken, becomes the hockey team's mascot and their only chance for a 
winning season.

* The Chicken Gave It To Me, Anne Fine, 1993, JFIC FINE (author of Alias Mrs. 
Doubtfire; see Flour Babies)
Andrew and Gemma find a story written by a chicken, describing how she has seen 
little green men come down from space with a plan to roast and eat the people of 
Earth.
Short chapter book with illustrations.

Add Dinoverse by Scott Ciencin (1999) for upper elementary age kids.

Five fifteen-year-old orphans of widely varying personality characteristics are 
involuntarily placed in a house of endless stairs as subjects for a psychological 
experiment on conditioned human response.

* The Fire Bug Connection (An Ecological Mystery), Jean Craighead George, 1993, 
JFIC GEORGE
Twelve-year-old Maggie receives European fire bugs for her birthday, but when they 
fail to metamorphose and grow grossly large and explode instead, she uses 
scientific reasoning to determine the cause of their strange death.



* Flour Babies, Anne Fine (1994) JFIC FINE
More of a psychology/social science experiment, when his class of underachievers is 
assigned to spend three torturous weeks taking care of their own "babies" in the 
form of bags of flour, Simon makes amazing discoveries about himself while coming 
to terms with his long-absent father.

the other odd jobs taken by Mozie and his partner Battie--until Mozie discovers a 
large, mummy-shaped pod on one of the plants.

* A Mammoth Mix-Up: A Brian & Pea Brain Mystery, Elizabeth Levy, 1995, JFIC LEVY
Brian and his younger sister Penny become involved in a mystery at the science 
museum where they are working on a woolly mammoth display for a science fair.  
Short chapter book with illustrations.



* Nutty Knows All, Dean Hughes, 1988, JH893
Fifth-grader, Nutty Nutsell, produces another memorable science fair project when 
his partner, William Bilks, transfers photons of light to Nutty's brain, causing a 
personality change and his head to glow in the dark.

* The Schernoff Discoveries, Gary Paulsen, 1997, JFIC PAULSEN
Harold and his best friend, both hopeless geeks and societal misfits, try to 
survive unusual science experiments, the attacks of the football team, and other 
dangers of junior high school.

* Zap! I'm A Mind Reader, Dan Greenburg, 1996 JFIC GREENBU
After an electrifying experiment in science class gives Zack a shock, he realizes 
that he can read other people's minds.

And we cannot forget that favorite picture book...

* June 29, 1999, David Wiesner, 1992 JPIC WIESNER
While her third-grade classmates are sprouting seeds in paper cups, Becky has a 
more ambitious, innovative science project in mind.
