Dear Friends, Thank you for your help on Maximus. Sorry it took so long to post a hit. http://freespace.virgin.net/david.ford2/maximus.html http://www.salve.edu/~romanemp/madmax.htm http://freespace.virgin.net/david.ford2/maximus.html http://myron.sjsu.edu/romeweb/EMPCONT/e217.htm http://search.britannica.com/bcom/eb/article/idxref/3/0,5716,207964,00.html http://members.aol.com/AACTchrOz/romans.html http://www.incwell.com/Scavenger/4ad.html#85 http://www.britannia.com/history/biographies/maximus.html http://www.legionxxiv.org/imperialtimeline/ This is a start, based on "emperor Maximus" search on Google.com Gratian, who was 16 years old became emperor in 367 when his father died of a stroke. His half-brother, Valentinian II was appointed co-emperor a few days later, even though he was only 4 years old. "Through poor judgement, Gratian slowly lost the support of the military, and in 383 the army of Britain proclaimed their own commander, Magnus Maximus, emperor. Gratian was captured and killed at Lyons in August 383, leaving Magnus Maximus in control of the provinces north of the Alps. When in 387 he invaded Italy, however, he was defeated and killed the following year. The main beneficiary was Valentinian II, now 19 years old, but he in turn was killed by Arbogast, his army commander, in May 392. With his death the luckless House of Valentinian came to an end." In another place in the book it says that Theodosius I (emperor 379-395) "led the army to Italy which defeated Magnus Maximus in 388, and in a sceond campaign in 394 overthrew Eugenius and Aborgast, murderer of Valentinian II." Again, thanks for your help. My son and his classmates are so impressed. Joanne D.
