Hi All,

I received an overwhelming response to my own request for new ideas for my
Waldo Search. Instead of getting new ideas I received many requests for
'the Waldo search itself" so I am posting it here for anyone interested.
The idea actually came from an article in the January 1995 edition of
"School Library Media Activities Monthly" magazine. The Librarian who
wrote the article is Penny Clark from Elkton Elementary in Elkton, OR. So
Penny, if you are reading this, my hat's off to you and please email me so
I can personally thank you for this awesome research tool. For those of
you who don't have access to the magazine I quoted, please see my
attachment. I have supplied a condensed version of how the Waldo search
works and the clues that Penny used for a Waldo search in the World and in
the USA. I have written one for a search in Canada, but am in the process
of rewriting due to the new province. I also have ideas for a Waldo
Search AT THE ZOO, and for our own hometown. Enjoy!

Where's Waldo Library Search
Adapted from =22School Library Media Activities Monthly=22
January 1995 copy

The purpose of the Waldo Search, although the students don't know it, =
is to use reference book.=20
Here's how it works: About a week before the Search, decorate a bullet=
in board with a map of the area Waldo is going to travel. I run my search=
over the course of 10 weeks so students have ample opportunity to research=
the clues given. One clue per week is posted - one on every Monday mornin=
g. So far I have used the World, and the United States whose clues were pr=
ovided by Penny and I wrote my own, where Waldo travels in Canada. The Can=
ada clues are not given here because I am reviewing them because of the add=
ition of another province. An explanation of the game is posted, and a pla=
ce established for clues to be found (usually on bulletin board with the ma=
p). I use red yard from week to week to follow Waldo on the map. I use t=
humbtacks or push pins to mark the area and wrap the yarn around it. Or yo=
u could use Penny's suggestion, which is have 10 stamps of Waldo's picture =
and place them on the map as he travels.
Each week a new clue is posted. The students read the clue, decide wh=
at they need to look up, and what reference book they should use=21 To mak=
e things easier you may want to put all reference books needed for this sea=
rch in one area. =20
When the students find the answer, they tell me and I give them a slip=
of paper so they can enter the =22Waldo=22 draw. Every Monday thereafter =
I draw a name from the draw box and reward the student with candy or some s=
mall prize. You can also, according to Penny, give all students who give t=
he correct answer a candy of some kind (Penny ran her Waldo search over 10 =
days). After the ten weeks I draw for more prizes and have Waldo books or =
other book prizes. I try to reward all students who participate in this Wa=
ldo search but it is difficult to know who has entered the contest.=20
Many students like to share the answer with friends and I always tell =
them that if they decide to do so, they are only hurting their own chances =
to win a reward for a research job well done=21 And therefore, they are a=
lso giving them a =22free=22 chance to win without doing the work=21 Most =
students see the point=21 I try to encourage students to research together=
in-groups if they choose to do so, or help others to research the answer t=
hemselves because as Penny so aptly put it =22the object is ALWAYS to use t=
he reference books=22.
I've used this search for 3 years and the kids love it=21 I hope I've cre=
dited Penny properly for writing this article. Thanks again=21
Here is the explanation of the search to post on the bulletin board:

        =20

The following are the clues as written by Penny Clark. Remember that I cha=
nged the clues to be used weekly. The clues will follow one after the othe=
r. First for a Waldo Search in the World, then for the United States. PS.=
In the clues, certain words will be capitalised. This indicates to the s=
tudent that it is an important clue and to focus on these words. Also, I u=
sually check out all of the references first to make sure the students can =
find the answers. Sometimes populations change, names of states, countries=
, etc. Just be aware of currency of information. The reference source and =
answer follows each clue.

realizes he does not have time to travel North to see them. Where in the =
World is Waldo? (A: India - map, dictionary, encyclopedia)

DAY 4 - Waldo thought India was a fascinating country and plans to return s=
omeday. In the meantime, he began on the next leg of his journey. He didn=
't have nearly as far to travel as before and soon entered the country flyi=
ng this flag. (Insert picture of the flag here). Where in the World is Wa=
ldo? (A: Iran - almanac)

DAY 8 - That's right. Yesterday, Waldo was in Poland. Imagine getting to =
meet the President of Poland and everything. It was certainly one of the h=
ighlights of Waldo's trip. Waldo dressed very warmly this morning in antic=
ipation of his next stop. He's travelling NORTH to a huge island. In fact=
it is the LARGEST ISLAND IN THE WORLD. Although this island has another n=
ame that is usually used, its official name is KALAALLIT NUNAAT and is owne=
d by Denmark. Where in the World is Waldo? (A: Greenland - map, atlas)

DAY 9 - Waldo thinks Greenland is just too cold, so today he is travelling =
below the equator to a country in SOUTH AMERICA. Not many people know this=
about Waldo, but he is a big COFFEE drinker. He came to the right place t=
