ELEM: explorer books

A fourth grade teacher at my school is searching for a book or series of
books about explorers. She would like the books to include information about
the explorer's life and not just about the actual exploration for which the
person is famous. In other words, she'd like the students to be able to read
about when an explorer was born and what he/she did while growing up. I have
checked catalogs and read Amazon reviews but have come up empty. Help!
