John and others, As a guide for citing books, periodicals, e-mail, online services, interviews, etc., we use a paperbound book ($10) titled Bud's Easy Research Paper Computer Manual for IBM PCs (2nd edition) as a guide--our research writing teacher recommends that students buy it to take to college and we order from Lawrence House Publishers. It gives examples for MLA and APA styles and also gives instructions for typing footnotes and bibs with the use of Word Perfect, Claris Works, MS Works, and MS Word (all for Windows 3.1, 95, and 98). It sounds as if you are using MLA style which shows "footnotes" in the text. According to Bud's (p 4-4) for a work listed by title (which would include web cites), you should "insert title of whole unsigned work in parentheses" within the text and additionally suggests that you do the same for online sources since there are no page numbers. My rule in hleping students is to use whatever info will appear first in the citation list (bibliography), whether it is the author or the title of an article, or even a governmental agency. That seems to make more sense to students (and to me) since you'd go to the list of citations and look under whatever you found in the text in parentheses, right? --Janet Hofstetter, librn California (MO) High School jhofstet@admin.california.k12.mo.us > There have been lots of postings about proper citation of Internet > sites, but nobody talks about how to make the citation within the text > of the paper.
