Several years ago when I was living in Upper East Tennessee, I had a
dear friend who spoke with a very pronounced Appalachian accent and used
many of the old patterns of speech from that region. I was reading one
day Jean Ritchie's story of growing up in the hills of Eastern kentucky,
a wonderful book, and my friend borrowed it and read it. In it, Ritchie
reproduces pretty accurately the speech of the local folks. My friend
got interested, borrowed the book, and read it. Afterwards, I asked her
how she'd liked it. She said she'd liked it a lot, but those people
shore talked funny. In fact, they spoke just the way she and her whole
family did....
