Hello all:

Maybe I missed any posting on it, but I would like to inform everyone
of the Sydney Taylor Award which was just announced by the Association
of Jewish Libraries for the best books of Jewish content for the year.
There is a picture book and novel category, and the awards are given out
at the annual convention of AJL ,which this year will be held in June in
Washington DC.

The award is named for the late Sydney Taylor, author of the
beloved All-of-a-Kind Family series of stories about a Jewish immigrant
family at the turn of the 20th century.

Speed of Light by Sybil Rosen (Atheneum Books for Young Readers. An Anne

Schwartz Book) is the winner of the award for older readers.

"This is an ambitious and exhilarating first novel which takes the
serious themes of
racism and anti-Semitism and transforms them into a story with great
child-appeal." said Linda Silver, Chair of the Sydney Taylor Award
Committee.

Honor books in the older readers category are: Journeys with Elijah by
Barbara Diamond Goldin, illustrated by Jerry Pinkney (Gulliver
Books/Harcourt
Brace and Company); When the Beginning Began by Julius Lester,
illustrated by
Emily Lisker (Silver Whistle/Harcourt Brace); and When the Soldiers Were
Gone
by Vera W. Propp (G.P. Putnam's Sons).

The Peddler's Gift by Maxine Rose Schur, illustrated by Kimberly Bulcken
Root
(Dial Books for Young Readers) is the winner of the award for younger
readers.

It tells the story of Shnook the Peddler, a "wise fool" whose kind
and generous heart changes a boy forever. Root's dusty colored
illustrations
and Schur's folkloric style capture the atmosphere of an Eastern
European
village.

Honor books in the younger readers category are: Baby's Bris by Susan
Wilkowski, illustrated by Judith Friedman (Kar-Ben Copies); Noah and the

Great Flood by Mordicai Gerstein (Simon and Schuster Books for Young
Readers); and Joseph Had a Little Overcoat by Simms Taback (Viking
Books).

This is the 30th year that the Sydney Taylor Book awards have been
given. For more information, visit AJL's website at
