Hello, astute colleagues! I have been enjoying this thread on regionalisms very much as it brings back fond memories of my early years in teaching. I began my career in a rural county to the southeast of the Atlanta metro area. I was confused when I heard my students saying things like "I need to trim my pencil" for sharpening a pencil, "I got bus left" for missing the bus or "Can I use your staple machine?" for borrowing a stapler. I was born in Richmond, VA and grew up hearing "warsh" for wash and "hoose" for house, but we never used "pop" or "soda" for carbonated drinks. Here in Atlanta the only caramel carbonated drink is "coke" even if the brand happens to be Pepsi, people are "carried to" places when given a ride, grocery carts are "buggies" and boiled turnips or collards are called "greens."
