I have just landed my first elem. job in a school media center. I graduate from USF with my master's in August. I have ten years of ESE teaching in secondary schools,. My school is being converted to a school of the arts this coming year, so while arts are important---we still need to work on basic skills. This is a low income, rural, community with a high mobility rate, where readiness skills are poor and the school has earned a D on the state grading scale for the past two years. Of course, becoming a choice school of the arts should help create a student body where success is important in school. I know I am going to have about three classes a day with a student body of 400, and no para. I am a planning period for the teachers. I am unsure of what type of learning centers work well in the media center in an elem. setting. My first thought (if we have the money or equipment) was to set up learning centers with books on tape. What are some other ideas any of you have tried? Any great series of books on tape you may have used.? I am open to any idea. While I understand there have been a great many children's books put on video I know this administration is discouraging use of video-----a request to show a video must be approved by the principal. I do not want to sink a lot of $$$ into videos for this reason. After I get responses I will post the results so others may benefit. Please send any ideas to me at Diane4585@aol.com.
