Netters, I have just returned from a week long workshop on Reading in the Content area put on by the Florida Literacy Project where the emphasis was on how to improve reading skills of middle and high school students. Very intense, a lot of information in a short time (I am still digesting and deciding how I can use it), and very encouraging. More workshops are planned and if you have an opportunity, I recommend you attend. In the meantime, you might try the book, Reading and the Middle School Student: Strategies to Enhance Literacy by J. L. Irving (1998) published by Allyn and Bacon. (A high school edition is also in the works.) I think probably the most important thing I was reminded of is that Reading is not just used in English class but in all classes and that ALL teachers must be involved in enhancing the learning of Reading by acknowledging its importance in their class and by utilizing strategies to assist their students to learn to Read.
